The lovely warm weather has definitely inspired my gardens and flowering trees to begin budding and blooming. Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, forsythia, magnolia, azaleas and more. The scent outside my door is unbelievable!

I love Spring!

Today's Painting A Day Challenge just had to be a floral painting.

Painting A Day for the Month of February Challenge

Glorious Blossoms
Painted on February 17, 2010

by Artist Rita Squier

On this snowy day in February, I decided spring flowers would be the perfect subject matter to paint today. Sure one could whine it's snowing again. But if it's gonna be cold, why not have snow? It makes everything look clean and pretty. The snow will melt and turn to water which soaks into the ground and will eventually help make the pretty Spring flowers grow.

The paintings from my Painting A Day for the Month of February Challenge are available for sale in my Etsy Shop: http://squier.etsy.com If you see one you really have to have and it is not yet listed in my Etsy shop, let me know and I would be happy to reserve it for you.

Sometimes it is just fun to start a painting without knowing exactly where it is going. Lay in some color and just run with it!

Tuesday's Tips and Techniques for Watercolor Painting

Flower Centers
When painting flower petals, leave a space for the center. Do not paint the color of the petals all the way to the center of the head of the flower and then add the center color either wet or dry. By doing this the colors will bleed into each other and it will not show up very well. Leave some of the white of the paper to fill in a pretty contrasting color for the center. This will allow the center of the flower to have a bit of it's own brilliance. It will also give the flower more depth and shape.

Lost and Found Edges

Garnet and Lavender Flowers
by Artist Rita Squier

Original Watercolor Painting
Size: 11 x 15 inches
Matted: 16 x 20 inches

Here is an excellent sample of a painting created mainly with lost and found edges. I started out with a wet into wet background wash of three colors. Once the wash had dried, I created the illusion of flowers with lost and found edges using the same three colors.

This painting is available.

Floral Watercolor ACEOs

Along with painting landscapes, I love to paint flowers.  I tend to paint little free flowing flowers, occasionally allowing the colors to mingle right on the paper.  I have created dozens of these in ACEO (2.5x3.5") size, also 4x6, 5x7, 1/8th sheets ... I have tried a few on 1/4 sheets of watercolor paper but I seem to like the smaller size better for this style of flower.  Most likely, just personal preference in creating these miniature florals.  A popular series of mine were my Autumn Poppies Series filled with orange, red and yellow flowers.

Check out the ACEO section of my Etsy shop for original watercolor florals and more!  ACEOs are definitely a popular size for artists to paint.  On Etsy, I am a member of the street team dedicated to ACEOs.   You can do a search on Etsy for the ACETSY Team to see a variety of ACEOs available there.

Bouquet of Posies seen here, is an original watercolor ACEO only 2.5x3.5" it is one of the many little floral paintings available in my Etsy Shop: http://squier.etsy.com
