ATC Swap

Last night in my watercolor class, we had an ATC swap. I had my students paint 12-18 little Artist Trading Cards.

Shown here are the 12 cards I painted just for trading in class.

I had everyone spread their cards out at one end of their table for everyone to be able to go around and see what each person painted. I had a class project for everyone to paint last night as well. We began the lesson.

We all had at least one extra card. Half way through class, I had everyone choose which card they thought was their best card and we placed them all in a box. We painted a little more on the night's painting. Then I announced they could all start trading. Each person was able to make at least one trade with everyone else in the class. If you had extras, you could make more than one trade with someone.

At the end of the night, everyone propped their paintings up in the front of class for the critique. After I critiqued each painting, I allowed the critique recipient to chose a card from the box without peaking. The very first person to pick from the box, picked her own card, so I took that from her allowed her to pick again and then I replaced her card in the box. No one else picked their own card.

At the end of the night, as people were packing up and leaving, I decided to peak into the box to see the one card that was left. The card I would take home as my bonus ... it was my own Artist Trading Card!

The top middle card in the photo, the all payne's grey landscape with two trees.

What is an ATC and ACEO?

Golden Drop
by Artist Rita Squier

Painting A Day - September 21, 2010

Original Watercolor
Size: 2.5 x 3.5 inches
ACEO Art Card

What is an ATC & ACEO?

Artist Trading Cards (ATC) - Traded amongst artists.

Art Cards, Editions & Originals (ACEO) - Sold to artists and collectors.

Artist Trading Cards and Art Cards are one in the same.

They are referred to as Artist Trading Cards when traded and Art Cards when sold.

The only requirement is the size. The size is 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches. The same size as other themed trading cards. They fit perfectly into the sleeves and sheets that are created for regular trading cards.

Artists from all over the world create these little works of art in a variety of different mediums and subject matter. Artists trade them with other artists.

Artists sell them to those who love small art and to those who would love to collect art but cannot really afford to buy the larger pieces the artist is selling. This also allows people to collect a larger variety of art since they are only buying little pieces. The art cards are meant to be sold at lower prices and to reach a wider audience.

They can be framed in little frames. They can be matted and framed singly in an 8x10 inch frame for a very contemporary look. Mat them in groups in a single mat to fill a larger or longer frame.

The Art Cards I have created have all been original watercolor paintings. I store them in a 3 ring binder filled with sheets of trading card sleeves. I sell my original watercolor Art Cards through my Etsy Shop.

Collecting Art Cards or Artist Trading Cards is a fabulous way to create your own art collection.

Second Week of the Challenge

Blooming Flowers
Spring Blossoms
Wishes for Spring

by Artist Rita Squier

Original Watercolor Paintings
ACEO Art Cards
Size: 2.5 x 3.5 inches

Painted today, February 8th for my at least one Painting A Day for the Month of February Challenge.

On a bright but chilly day, I'm dreaming of flowers, the flowers of Spring!

ACEO = Art Cards, Editions & Originals
ATC = Artist Trading Cards

ACEOs are sold to artists and collectors. ATCs are traded amongst artists. They are relatively the same, yet one is sold and the other is traded. The requirement of an ACEO/ATC is the size which is 2.5 x 3.5 inches. The same size as any trading card.

They fit perfectly into sleeves and binders sleeves created for trading cards. They look lovely framed alone or in groups.

Artists from all over the world create these little works of art in a variety of mediums and subject matter. Artists trade them with other artists. There are card swaps all over the world. Artists will sell them to those who love small art, to those who love to collect art but cannot really afford to buy or don't have the room for larger pieces an artist may be selling. It allows people to collect and store a larger variety of art because of their small size. The art cards are meant to be sold at reasonable prices to reach a wider audience.

Yesterday

Snowflakes 1 through 12
by Artist Rita Squier

A dozen ACEO Art Cards
Original Watercolor Paintings
Size: 2.5 x 3.5 inches

Yesterday, I was cleaning up and rearranging my studio. I am starting to prepare for a new project. I found a piece of watercolor paper with pencil lines lightly drawn on it. I took out a ruler and measured it. The grid size was 2.5x3.5 inches. Perfect for art cards. I also found a few of my old watercolor Christmas cards which were the inspiration for the design. A larger painting trimmed and separated into mini paintings. I have not decided if they will be ACEOs, art cards for sale or ATCs, artist trading cards.

Summertime Inspiration

Forest Path
by Artist Rita Squier

Original Watercolor Painting
ACEO - Art Card
Size: 2.5 x 3.5 inches

Once again we spend a great deal of time during the summer in the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate New York. Nature, visits to the lake, occasional hikes are a great source of inspiration when it comes to my paintings. Through my art I would love to share a bit of this tranquility with you.

My Student's Art

Art Card Swap in Watercolor Class
Last night we swapped Artist Trading Cards in class. My students loved it! Everyone had so much fun trading the mini works of arts amongst each other. The biggest challenge was getting around to trade with everyone between the steps of our painting project.

We all painted 18 art cards using watercolor, in any style and subject mattered. I had a few extra in my give away stash, more to choose from is always fun.

Here are the art cards I traded mine away for ... I love them!

Trading Art Cards

My Watercolor Art Cards, Waiting to be Traded
I teach a watercolor painting class for adults and I introduced my students to the world of Art Cards - Artist Trading Cards - ACEOs. Tomorrow night we will all be trading amongst each other in class. Shown here are the cards I painted to trade in class. All of my art cards are original watercolor paintings.

ACEO stands for Art Cards, Editions & Originals
ATC stands for Artist Trading Cards

The art cards are known as ATCs when traded and ACEOs when bought and sold. They are pretty much the same. The key important thing for art cards is the size. ACEOs and ATCs are alway 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches. They can be created in any medium.

Buying or trading art cards is a great and inexpensive way to collect little pieces of original art from a wide variety artists.

A Little Escape to the ACEO Seaside

Seaside I
by Artist Rita Squier

Wouldn't you just love an escape to the seaside right about now? I know I certainly would.

Not only is this an original watercolor painting but it is also considered an Art Card often times called an ACEO or an ATC.

ACEO stands for Art Cards, Editions or Originals. ATC stands for Artist Trading Card. The only requirement for them is the size which is 2.5" x 3.5", the same size as baseball trading cards. They were created for artists to trade amongst each other. Art lovers wanted them too and if they are bought and sold they are considered ACEOs. They are created in pretty much any medium.

All of my ACEOs are original watercolor paintings. This one and more are available in my Etsy Shop: http://squier.etsy.com

Just a warning ... once you buy one, you will want more! It is a great way to purchase a little piece of affordable art and start a collection.

ACEO - Art Cards, Editions and Originals

In my previous blog I mentioned ACEOs.  Art Cards, Editions and Originals little miniature pieces of art that are the size of trading cards.  They are 2.5 x 3.5".  They are small.  Artists create them to show off their art, they trade them amongst themselves.  When traded the art cards are called Artist Trading Cards or ATCs.  Many people love them and want to collect them.  When they are created to sell or trade with collectors, they are considered ACEOs.  Some are originals, some are prints and some prints are limited edition prints.  Artists create them in a variety of mediums.  It seems as though there are no limits to the medium, the only limit to an ACEO or ATC is the size, the dimensions must be 2.5 x 3.5 inches.

All of the ACEOs I have created are all original watercolor paintings.  I have become addicted to painting these little works of art, they are so much fun to paint.  ACEOs have become this craze.  Artists love to create them, collectors love to collect them.  You can display them in a beautiful binder using the plastic sleeves meant for trading cards.  Some people love to place them in a basket and flip through them now and then.  Others will frame them on their own or in groups to hang on the wall or prop on a desk.  It is great to have just a little piece of art to brighten up a small space.

I have a bunch of original watercolor ACEO paintings for sale in my Etsy Shop.  They seem to be the hot ticket right now!  Get 'em while they're hot ... check out the ACEO section of my Etsy Shop at http://squier.etsy.com
